This is the syllabus I used in my undergraduate course at CUNY in autumn 2022. The readings very much aimed to give students the tools to understand how Congress functions, and to empower them to be able to read news about Congress and get past the headlines and and editorializing to what really is occurring (e.g., symbolic action, horse-trading, etc.) At the end of the semester, student ratings were quite high. Presidential Idol is a group project presentation that divides the class into groups of five-to-six students. Each group draws an American president (excluding the incumbent one) from a list of presidents created by the instructor.
