These four assignments are a highly worthwhile model for faculty seeking to deepen students’ understanding of civic life through experiential learning. By inviting students to engage directly in political and community-based activities of their own choosing, it encourages “Mesearch”: the personal exploration of political and civic systems through individual interests, values, and lived experiences. This structure promotes student ownership of learning, while simultaneously reinforcing key course concepts through reflective practice. Students build meaningful connections between classroom learning and real-life experiences by encouraging students to volunteer on campaigns, attend local meetings, or work with community organizations—then critically analyzing these experiences through journals and a final reflective essay. The assignment not only helps demystify government processes and institutions, but it also fosters a lasting sense of civic responsibility and political agency. Its flexibility, rigor, and grounding in experiential pedagogy make it a strong addition to any curriculum in American politics.
