This course introduces students to the political science subfield of Environmental Politics, studying how the people of the world, through public and private efforts, are confronting ecological crises threatening our planet. Topics include the history of human impacts, the nature of current threats, environmental philosophies, the role of political parties and environmental movements, environmental policy, international agreements, and the global politics of sustainability. A key focus is on the politics of climate change, especially Indigenous and youth activism. Although an introductory-level course, the syllabus calls for substantial reading, as well as full student engagement with discussions, videos, and individual projects, and is appropriate for all undergraduate levels.
